August 2010

AUGUST, 2010 – GENERAL MEETING:

The Chamber’s August, 2010 General Meeting will be held on Thursday, August 5th, at 8:00 a.m. at Myron & Phil Steak and Seafood restaurant (3900 W. Devon Ave.).  The Chamber would like to thank Mark Freedman for hosting this meeting and Dennis Hammer and Kate Gallagher from North Shore Community Bank & Trust and for hosting our July, 2010 general meeting.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING:

The next Board of Directors’ meeting will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 4:00 PM at the Edgebrook Public Library, 5331 W. Devon Avenue (312) 744-8313.  Thanks again to Kathryn Panares for providing us with our meeting room.

2010 EDGEBROOK FESTIVAL RECAP:

As you all know, our annual Edgebrook Festival was held on Friday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 24th. Unfortunately, weather dealt us a bad hand and the festival had to shutdown on Friday for an extended period of time due to very heavy rainfall and the threat of lightning.  The festival did finally resume and patrons listened to some great music.  As the festival ended for the night, it started to rain again, and before you knew it, a near monsoon hit the region which lasted all night and into the early morning on Saturday.  There was concern the weather would affect the Saturday turnout of a record number of artisan and crafters registered to participate in the festival.  However, around 8:00 am the weather finally broke into bright sunshine and 90% of the artisan and crafters that had signed up for the festival decided to participate.

2010 saw a change in the festival layout which was very well received.  The Music Stage was moved to far end of N. Kinzua Avenue in the cul-de-sac. This helped to draw patrons through the artisan booth areas, the Kids Corner and the beverage and food courts.  The Kids Corner was situated in Essence Med Spa’s parking lot to achieve a safer and more secure location for the family-oriented activities.  Hats off to Jenise Celestin and Swedish Covenant Hospital for their willingness to coordinate the Kids Corner activities this year and it is a fun experience for neighborhood families.  Although no additional rain fell on Saturday, it was quite hot and humid as a result of the prior day’s rain.  Attendance was down and food and beverage sales suffered as a result.  The weather conditions probably forced some people to stay in their air-conditioned homes.

The festival committee would like also like to thank Pat Lyons, our music coordinator, for putting together an outstanding lineup of musicians.  Unlike other localfestivals, the musicians that play at our festival have deep roots in Edgebrook, they understand the importance of this event, and they play for a fraction of the price they could demand elsewhere.  Many thanks also go out to Mark Freedman from Myron & Phil Steak and Seafood restaurant for coordinating the food vendors.

We would also like to thank our Platinum sponsors:

* Swedish Covenant Hospital

* Marti Corcoran – Century 21 McMullen

* Barb Eastman -  Happy Foods

* Joseph Mullarkey Distributors

CITY OF CHICAGO LITTER NOTICE:

Each year, the City of Chicago must use millions of taxpayer dollars to clean-up litter.  Refuse can cause neighborhoods and business districts to look run down and deteriorated.  The City has implemented an aggressive anti-littering program to alert people to help eliminate this problem and allow these funds to be targeted to more productive uses.  You can down load the info at: www.cityofchicago.org/streetsandsanitation.

WEBSITE ADVERTISEMENTS:

The Chamber’s Website Business Card advertising program continues to be a smashing success.  Already, twenty-four (24) businesses have taken advantage of this program.  Ample room has been created on the web site to accommodate many more.  For a nominal charge of $100 for one (1) calendar year (less than $8.50 per month), your business card will be posted on the front-page of the chamber’s website. In addition, if your business has a website, one simply has to double-left click on your business card, and BOOM, they are transported to your website instantly!

CHICAGO SIGN AMNESTY PROGRAM:

From April 15th through October 15, 2010, the City of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection is offering its Chicago Sign Permit Amnesty program to any existing business with an existing sign, canopy, awning, marquee or banner that advertises that business at that business location.  If you apply for the correct permits you need during the amnesty period, your fees will be waived for the first year.  Visit their website at: www.cityofchicago.org/bacp.

TRANSFERRING ASSETS TO BENEFICIARIES:

There are many good reasons to transfer your assets, however, unnecessary taxes, penalties, asset limitations and reporting deadlines could run you afoul without the proper advice and preparation.  Our own Jillian Holly and Jeffery Curio of The Hartman-Curio Group will be holding a seminar on this subject on Wednesday, August, 25, 2010 (5:00 pm) at Max and Erma’s (461 Waukegan Road, Brookside Plaza, Northbrook, IL)  This is an important subject we should all know more about and it is also a free chamber-sponsored seminar that includes a complimentary light dinner.  Please RSVP to Joni Sharkey at (847) 831-7942 by Monday, August 23, 2010.
